Special Children do Deserves Quality Education



When we speak of special children, what are the things that came out instantly from our minds? Probably, we will think of children with an average intelligence quotient (IQ) of 120+, indicating intelligence superiority among children of his or her age.

Maybe, you will think of children whose father or mother is a high-ranking government official, or a famous actor. Special children are ones with one or several disabilities.

Sometimes we think that once we have lost even a single body function, let us say, our sense of sight, we lose hope, thinking we are not capable of living in this world or enjoying the beauty of life, anymore. We may probably lose our minds and the best place for us is in a mental institution, where hope begins to diminish. This must not be the case in considering special children

Most special children do not just sit in a corner and blame everyone for not accepting them in the society; instead, they are coming out of the darkness, eagerly and constantly learning different things despite of their disabilities.

They do not just slink away without being recognized in the society – they are fighting to be one of the most productive citizens, even much more productive from those of a normal person.

How can a special child be eligible to special education? To start with, every institution clearly defines what special education mean and the qualifications needed in order to become eligible in the said program.

According to special education analysts, it is an educational program designed to meet the requirements of learning for a child with disability, or a special child. A special child is clearly defined as one that may have one or all of the following:

• Mental retardation
• Hearing disability such as deafness
• Speech or language impairment
• Visual disability, including blindness
• Emotional disturbances like trauma
• Specific learning impairment, and
• Multiple disabilities

A child may be eligible for special education if he or she has met the following requirements:

• He or she has any of the aforementioned disabilities, and

• There is an urgent need special education as determined by the evaluation team. This evaluation team looks upon the history of the special child. They find out how he or she acquired such disability, and the child's weaknesses. They also determined the eagerness of the child to place him or herself under the program.

Several programs are prepared for special children such as the following:

• Individualized Education Program. This program will measure the capability of the special child to learn different subject matters in their convenient way. This is reviewed annually, revising some of the learning strategies for effective special child learning.

• Free Appropriate Public Education. It is a program of education for a special child designed to meet his or her educational needs in order to allow them make some meaningful progress in the educational setting. This can be availed free, depending upon the evaluation and recommendation of special education evaluators.

• Transition Programs. This program provides additional learning for special children who have gone through the basics of special child education and successfully completed it.

This program provides the necessary application of learning for them to cope up with normal people. It prepares the special children for much higher learning, specifically in higher education or on the job trainings, community interaction, and employment once they leave the institution.

Special children must be treated with utmost care for they are also human beings capable of doing things despite of their disabilities. They are also entitled to education, just like a normal person.
