U.S. Department of Education: Education is a Must



The Department of Education of the U.S. or ED is an executive department of the U.S. government directed and presented in the cabinet by the secretary of education.
The major function of the Department of Education is to coordinate and publish the Education policy.

On October 17, 1979, the late President Jimmy Carter signed this policy into law. Due to Carter’s initiative, it was passed under the Education Organization Act. Shirley M. Hufstedler was the first secretary. She had sworn on December 6, 1979. May 7, 1980 is when the department of Education officially established.

There are many states in U.S. the law says that there should be a Department of Education in each state of the U.S., so, there are many local adoptions of ED. ED is headquartered in Washington. There are ten regional offices through out the country.

ED collects funds for financial aid of college students in order to improve basic skills and support educational vocation of all the students in the country.

This department assures that all students under all ages be enrolled in colleges, schools and vocational centers. The department ensures that all students of the state is given all the possible access to equal quality educational opportunity, the participation of students, public and parents to the improvement and propagation of education, and also improve the quality of education by continuously having a research, evaluation and sharing of knowledge.

ED should improve the quality of education and increase the accountability of the federal education programs; this is also one of their missions.

Department of Education has seven major units.
• The Office of Bilingual Education and Minority of Affairs - This particular unit administers programs that enable persons with English deficiency to participate in a classroom where English is the medium of speech to facilitate environmental learning.

• The Office of the Civil Rights - This particular unit prohibits discrimination on color, racial national origin, sex, age and disabled person and should receive the education that normal people receives.

They also monitor successful programs and determine weak ones that need some improvements.

• The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education - These maintain the quality of education given to elementary and secondary schools. This also works with state and local agency to promote educational excellence and equal opportunity. They also maintain and improve the patterns of teaching to help the student in learning the lessons easily.

• The Office of the Postsecondary Education - This unit provides the financially needy students who graduated from high school to go on college. This supports student’s services, institutional development, housing and facilities, foreign language and area studies, cooperative education, international education, innovative teachings and methods, historically black colleges, veteran’s affair and many more.

• The Office of the Special Educational and Rehabilitative Services - This particular unit helps student with disability to improve their lives by, rehabilitating and by giving quality educations what they need them. They help support disabled groups financially for the continuity of their education.

• The Office of Vocational and Adult Education - This unit helps adult people for future jobs. This unit provides adults with basic skills that they need in finding and doing their future jobs. This also helps the people of all ages from all walks of life to be employed.

These are the programs helpful for the people in U.S. The education of U.S. citizens is secured under the Department of Education. To improve the quality of life, everyone deserves to go to school.
